In the United States, high technology rescue medicine has often been used to extend the lives of those who are dying. Some medical ethicists suggest that such dependence on technology has indeed saved lives but has also "disfigured dying." In this Sundays At CTU lecture, Rev. Thomas Nairn, O.F.M., Ph.D. looks at the phenomenon of dying in the United States today and asks if the Catholic moral tradition has anything to say regarding care for those at the end of life in our highly technologized society.

Most North American Christians have lost such intimacy with the created world. We are not able to immediately recognize creation as God’s self-revelation complementing familiar biblical witnesses to God’s grandeur. In fact, we have come close to obliterating much of the natural world, marring it to the extent that it can barely eke out a mere whimper in praise of God’s glory rather than a “shout of joy.”
