Shapiro Lecture Series: Despite the ongoing conflict and the general neglect by the media, power brokers, and the public, many grassroots organizations in the Middle East persist in their dedication to "people to people" diplomacy between Israelis and Palestinians. These organizations share the view that a peace plan, when it eventually comes, will be ineffective, unless an infrastructure of trust and understanding is built on the ground in advance.

What if we woke up one morning and discovered that the Second Vatican Council had never happened? We would discover that a place like Catholic Theological Union would not exist, that there would be little or no lay ministry in the Church, that we would have no liturgy in our own language; that there would be little or no reading of the Bible, that most people would still believe that there is no salvation outside the Church. In his talk, Fr. Bevans will offer his reflections as a kind of thought experiment.

This presentation is the Catholic keynote address given by The Rev. Thomas Michel, S.J., Ph.D., Francis C. Wade, S.J. Professor of Theology, Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI USA).
