In 1996, the Catholic Common Ground Initiative was founded in an effort to lessen polarities and divisions that weaken the communion of the church. At the origin of the Initiative, the National Pastoral Life Center released a charter statement, “Called to Be Catholic: Church in a Time of Peril,” proposing guidelines for dialogue within the church. The Initiative begun more than twenty years ago by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin continues today.

The Center for the Study of Consecrated Life (CSCL) was established in 2016 to serve as a theological, academic, and pastoral resource for engaging contemporary issues and realities in consecrated life today from a global perspective. The CSCL carries out its mission through courses, symposia, and workshops. The CSCL seeks to encourage new scholarship across disciplines; provide processes for reflective dialogue and creative imagining; assist in the discovery of new calls to ministry; and explore the internationality of consecrated life.

Laurie Brink, OP, PhD, Professor of New Testament Studies The Incarnation of Jesus means that, though he is the Son of God, Jesus is one like us (Heb 4:15), having experienced a full range of emotions, struggles, successes, and failures. Far from removing himself from the pain and suffering of his day, Jesus reached out in compassion, restored those who were suffering, and returned frequently to his source of strength. As we prepare for the Christmas celebration of the Incarnation, these sessions provide us an opportunity to reflect on the humanity of Jesus.

Many people look to their religious leaders for guidance on issues relating to science and technology, even though clergy and lay members may have had little exposure to science in their educational experience. This innovative program will integrate science into the core curriculum of CTU. Dawn Nothwehr, OSF and Anne McGowan are leading efforts on campus which have resulted in a grant funded by the John Templeton Foundation. The grant funds the participation of seminaries and schools of theology in the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER), a program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), in consultation with the Association of Theological Schools (ATS).
