Human Fraternity: Implications of a Ground-Breaking Document for Christian-Muslim Relations

On February 4, 2019 / 29 Jumada 1 1440, Pope Francis and Shaykh al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayeb made history in Abu Dhabi. They signed the first recorded joint statement between a Roman Pontiff and the Shaykh al-Azhar, one of the oldest and most revered institutions of Muslim religious learning. Leaders of the National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue heed the call of the document and engage in reflection on its challenging content.

Such claims consequently aroused strong political responses, resulting in the religious sphere being drawn into the orbit of the state.
