The church’s cycle of scriptural readings for the liturgy offers all believers an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Word of God. It is a very real and tangible way of responding to the call of Jesus: “Remain in me, as I remain in you.” In these selections of her popular weekly column “The Word” in America magazine, Barbara Reid, OP, offers reflections on the Scripture readings for each Sunday and solemnity for Lectionary Year B. Together, they serve as a weekly aid to enter more deeply into the abiding word.

This past week CTU welcomed more than one hundred new students to begin their studies and spiritual formation for a variety of ministries in the church.  Some will become priests, some are religious sisters and brothers, and many will serve as lay ecclesial ministers.  Some serve in pastoral ministries, some are hospital chaplains, others are youth ministers and teachers, to name only a few.

“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,” Robert Frost wrote a century ago. The reality of that poetic statement is never more evident than on the sides of the Wall—the Security Fence according to Israelis or the Apartheid Wall according to Palestinians—that separates Israel from the West Bank. To drive up the toll road from Tel Aviv to Hadara, the twenty-four foot high enclosure resembles the sound barriers built along our interstates. But cross into the area controlled by the Palestinian Authority and the Wall is filled with graffiti, demanding its demolition.
